Nerang falls under the City of Gold Coast, and most established trees on private property here are covered by the council's vegetation management rules, so it's worth checking before any cutting starts. As a general rule, a tree needs a development approval before removal if it stands over 4 metres tall, has a trunk wider than 40 centimetres around (measured 1.3 metres up from the ground), or forms part of mapped remnant, regrowth or wetland vegetation.
A handful of situations are usually exempt from that approval, trees close to an existing boundary fence or approved structure, within 1.5 metres of a pool fence, identified as a pest species by a Level 3 arborist, or assessed as dangerous by a council Level 5 arborist. Worth knowing these exemptions don't apply if your property's on body corporate or community title land, so check your title type first if that applies to you.
