OVERGROWN PALMS? SEQ'S MOST TRUSTED PALM PRUNING EXPERTS ARE JUST A CALL AWAY.

Palms are one of SEQ's most iconic features, but left unchecked, they can become a real problem. Dead fronds build up, unsightly skirts form around the trunk, and heavy frond bunches can drop without warning, causing damage to property or becoming a safety risk during storm season.

Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast's subtropical climate means palms grow fast year round, which is great for aesthetics but means they need regular attention to stay healthy and safe. At Arborsafe Tree Services, we've been maintaining palms across SEQ for more than 25 years. From a single backyard Bangalow to a row of towering Queen Palms along a driveway, our qualified arborists know exactly how much to take off, and when, to keep your palms looking their best without compromising their health.

ABOUT OUR PALM PRUNING SERVICE

Palms might look low maintenance but pruning them incorrectly can do real damage. Over-pruning, sometimes called "hurricane cutting", stresses the palm, weakens its structure and can actually slow healthy new frond growth. Under-pruning leaves you with a build-up of dead fronds that become a fire risk, a home for pests, and a hazard when they eventually drop.

As a family owned and operated business, Ryan and Lloyd Keegan lead a team of qualified Certificate 3 arborists who understand the growth habits of SEQ's most common palm species, from Golden Cane and Foxtail to Cocos and Queen Palms. We know how much to remove, when to do it, and how to leave your palms looking clean and healthy without putting them under unnecessary stress. Our equipment is well maintained, we carry $20 million public liability insurance, and we'll always give you an honest assessment of what your palms actually need. Call us for a free quote today.

HOW TO KNOW WHEN YOUR PALMS NEED PRUNING

Palms don't always make it obvious when they need attention. Here's what to look out for:

  • Dead or browning fronds hanging down around the trunk that won't fall off on their own.
  • A thick skirt of old fronds building up, which is a fire risk and attracts pests.
  • Heavy frond bunches or seed pods overhanging a roof, vehicle or walkway.
  • Stunted or discoloured new growth, which can signal the palm is under stress.
  • Visible crown damage after a storm that needs removing before it drops.
  • It has been more than 12 months since your last prune.

If you're noticing any of the above, call Arborsafe on 0418 197 006 for a free quote across Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ABOUT PALM PRUNING IN SEQ

Have a question about palm pruning in South East Queensland, including Brisbane, Logan and the Gold Coast? If you don't see the answer below, get in touch with our team for a free quote.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD PALMS BE PRUNED

Most palms in South East Queensland need pruning once a year. SEQ's warm, humid climate means palms grow quickly and dead fronds accumulate fast. Some species like Cocos Palms may need attention more frequently, while slower growing varieties can go a little longer between prunes.

HOW MUCH DOES PALM PRUNING COST IN BRISBANE OR THE GOLD COAST?

Cost depends on the height of the palm, how many need pruning, and how much access our team has to work safely. We provide free no-obligation quotes so you know exactly what you're up for before any work begins. Call 0418 197 006 to book yours.

IS IT DANGEROUS TO PRUNE PALMS YOURSELF?

Yes, particularly for tall palms. Working at height without the right equipment and training is a serious risk, and incorrectly pruning a palm can damage its crown and affect long-term health. It's always safer and more cost-effective to use a qualified arborist.

DO YOU NEED A PERMIT TO REMOVE A PALM IN QLD

It depends on the species and your council area. Some palms, particularly Cocos Palms, are considered environmental weeds and can be removed freely. Others may require council approval. We can advise you on the requirements for your specific situation before any work is carried out.

How do you prune a palm tree?

Palm pruning involves removing dead, brown or dying fronds by cutting them as close to the trunk as possible without damaging the crown. Green fronds should generally be left in place as removing them can stress the palm and slow new growth. Seed pods and fruiting stems are also typically removed to reduce mess and the weight load on the tree. For tall palms or any work near structures, this should always be carried out by a qualified arborist with the right equipment.
