What is stump grinding?
Stump grinding is the process of using a specialised machine to grind a tree stump down into small wood chips, removing it below the surface of the ground. Unlike stump removal, which involves extracting the entire root system, stump grinding targets the stump itself and the immediate roots, leaving the remaining roots to naturally decay underground. It is the most efficient and cost-effective way to remove a stump and leave a clean, level surface ready for turfing, paving or landscaping.
How long does stump grinding take?
Most stump grinding jobs take between 30 minutes and a few hours depending on the size of the stump, the hardness of the wood and how accessible the area is. A single small to medium stump in an open area can often be completed in under an hour, while larger stumps or multiple stumps in confined spaces will take longer. Does stump grinding remove roots?
Stump grinding removes the stump and the immediate root system below it, but does not extract every root from the ground. The remaining roots are left to decay naturally underground, which typically takes a few years depending on the species.
